On "Gold Feeling," Fred Nicolaus describes an emotional turning point that landed Kubla Khan it's joyful, stand out single:

"I wrote 'Gold Feeling' in the last few weeks of a recording process that started one year earlier with a gloomy despair ballad. The song makes me think of the distance covered over that time — the shedding of layers and layers of contemplative folky doom to get to something fun and loose and free. I'm always complicating things in music and life by trying to be clever and 'sophisticated,' so it felt really good to do something simple and true — I did really want to dance that night."
